Photography!!!

Well, seems like we have a few amature and some pro photographers here so why not start this thread.

I just got a used Canon D30 camera and received it yesterday but it's in new condition. I'm not on a tight budget for any of my toys, just depends how fast my expendable cash flow comes in. wink I pay cash for just about everything no matter what.

So I have the following;

Canon D30
Tamron 28-70 F/3.5-5.6"

I'm looking for a flash, undermount powerpack, 50mm fix lens and something to replace the Tamron or just keep it for now till it gives out.

Suggestions???

2009 Full tilt and better than ever, gonna be nuts in a good way. He, he.

Re: Photography!!!

new lenses you should get for the season

a sigma 18-50 F/2.8, superb optical quality, goes for 350$ new
a sigma 50-150 F/2.8 HSM, superb opticalquality, nice focal lenght, lens of the year, and very fast, goes for 600$
a canon 50mm F/1.8, sharpest lense available, ice focal lenght, super dupe fast, goes for 90$ new
a nice, super wide angle, such as a sigma 10-20, tokina 12-24 F/4, the tokina is better built and faster but the only available on ebay, sigma is allot wider .both goes for about 500$ each

flashes:

Canon 580EX
Canon 580EXII
canon 430EX

cards

get some sandisk extreme IV 2,4 gb cards
as well as a nice tripod, believe me, you can always justify the price of a good tripod, get a manfrotto 190Xprob, it goes for about 160$ legs only, 200 with a head.
get a nice camera bag, you will like the dakine sequence, they were made for sports photographer, they're big, comfy and don't look like a cam bag, otherwise, a tamrac expedition 5(i use the larger one)
get some filters, for portrait especially, You will need a UV filter for each of your lenses to protect them from scratch mostly, you would like to have a neutral density filter, a graduated filter, a circular polarizer
get a good shutter release cable, to minimize camera shake when on tripod for long exposition

get the adobe lightroom software, download the trial, and well, if you feel like a "thief", you can easily go on google for serials, its the best software available, and becomes a killer when you use photoshop cs2 or cs3 as the big gun

Re: Photography!!!

I own a Canon Rebel XT and it does the job for what I need. I would prefer a "D" serie camera body since the Rebel is freaking small in my hand. At some point, I will probably add the battery grip.

I *LOVE* my Canon 17-85 IS USM F/4-5.6 but wish I could add at least 2 other. A Canon 50 F/1.8 and some fish eye, most likely a Sigma for price consideration.

I have a basic UV and a polarized filter. The UV filter is always on the lens, and I sometime use the polarized. The "no-brand-name" cost about 50$ instead of 100+ and it works well enough for me. Got those at Simon's Camera, downtown Montreal. Maybe not as sharp as some other but more than enough for me.

For the flash, give a look at http://www.sigmaphoto.com/flashes/flash … p?id=3257. Paid less than 250$ shipped to my door. Specs are pretty close to the Canon 580EX for half the price. Do yourself a favor and get a 4000mA NiMH rechargeable battery kit. Cost about 50$ at FutureShop. I have a Panasonic kit that still rocks after 1 year - only downside, it start to show some sign of its age when it's very cold outside. Flash recharge time is longer and battery drain faster.

I have a Manfrotto tripod that I paid about 140$ at LLLozeau. I'm very happy to have paid the premium to have a strong, stable tripod with a good head. It does make a huge difference.

That's for the big camera. I also own a little Canon A70 that I keep in my Camelback but I've tried a Canon SD-1000 last weekend and really enjoyed it.

Nope, the 900$ version is the 50mm F/1.2 L lens, the 1.8 is available at any el-cheapo camera store.

Re: Photography!!!

Today I went to Orford @ Camp Jouvence to get one of my daughters on a 3 day trip with the school, she fell ill so I drove there and back to get her. I took my camera with me and took some shots at the camp and along the way back with my daughter since she liked some of the scenerie and asked me too. I shot my images in RAW, pain in the ass to convert them afterwards and I'm new with these high end camera's compared to 35mm. Should I shoot in RAW or not? What's the real difference and this is a question for the pro's please since I'm educating myself here and trust me I learn very fast. wink

Thank you in advance.

Cheers
John

Re: Photography!!!

Shoot in RAW. The PITA is worth it.

You have much more possibilities to make adjustments with the software settings...instead of already compressed JPEG.

Of course, you can do some corrections with PS on JPEG, but each time you save a JPEG, you loose some quality.

Also, you have the EXIF's (informations *name, camera body serial number, lense serial number, camera settings, etc* written in every picture you take)

Re: Photography!!!

Viens me voir au futureshop ste-dorothée

Ps : 50mm f1.8
130 piaces new.
90 en spécial (parfois)
le meilleur bang for the buck.

PPPS : Etz : Got any lenses to sell? i'm using the d80 and I'd like to get some new lenses.

PPPPS : How do I convert raw? I dont know how to convert it so i shoot in jpeg extra fine.
I'd shoot Raw + jpegxtrafine instead

@John,

Battery grip= Vraiment superflu

Looks like mine.

Besure it has a "raincoat". It is concealed in the lower part. VERY important when you shoot on a rainy day...on a dirty trail when mud fly everywhere...

A very good choice indeed.

You'll be happy with it.

I'm using mine since May 2005 and never failed. It doesn't show any sign of aging, no tear or whatever and Gods know i'm using it a lot.

Be sure to secure you camera on TOP of the backpack...NOT on the lower part. When you drop your pack, even if there's lots of padding, it can be dangerous for the body and lenses.

And KEEP IT FIRMLY CLOSE BEFORE putting the bag on your shoulders...i learned it few months ago...BANG CRASH SNAP! OH NO, F*CKING LORD!!! mad

For those who want to have informations on lenses BEFORE buying them, look there:

www.photozone.de

Click on the "Review" icon and you'll get a very nice listing of Canon/Nikon lenses with a detailled review. I spent few hours on it before buying. A must!
