Well, I got a new lens today and very happy with it plus I already had lots of Tiffen filters with the same thread size so bonus. Once I'll have my other 2 lens I'll get in touch with Tiffen for filters, I was a client of theirs and still know some people there.
So the lens I got:
EF 50mm f/1.8 II

ok
so now:
-save up for the 17-40 L F/4, very nice and pretty cheap lens, plus it's an L lens:P
-then save up for a nice telephoto, get a 70-200 2.8, the sigma version goes for 800$, the canon one for about 1200 for the non-is and 1800 for the is, 700 for the f/4 non is
-you then might want to consider a 580 ex or exII flashgun
-a nice tripod, I suggest a manfrotto 055xprob or a 190xprob, with a nice ball head, the legs go for 150$
-and I might consider looking into another body, the eos 1d mk II goes for about 1500$ and is a veryyyy nice camera for the price

All very good suggestion and I already have a sigma 70-200 in sight or a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4.0-5.6 IS Lens. Both a great deal but I'll see later.
As for a new Camera body that's going to wait because even with all the cash I make for toys, it doesn't quite grow on trees in the back yard yet. Still looking for such a tree. ![]()

don get that shitty 55-250 or any variable aperture lens john
get a fixed aperture lens, for sports most likely f/4 or faster
I found all my 52mm lens filters so tyhey fit on my new 50mm lens and I even gave a tiffen polarizer. Also I have some screw on diopters from my old job which are also from Tiffen and they are as follow, +2, +3 and +4 diopters. I use those for close ups with the 50mm lens and the result is amazing.

I purchased 2 new batteries for my D30 but generics with a 2000mAh capacity and Lithium Ion. Cost me $28 for both shipped to my mailbox. ![]()
Saving up some cash slowly to get a 18-55mm lens.

DOOOONNNNNNTTTTT EEEVVVVVEEERRR BUYYYY AAAA KKKKIIIITTTT LLLLEEENNNSSSS
the 18-55 is worst than you tamron, as I said, look for a canon 17-40 L f/4 for about 750$ or a sigma 18-50 2.8 for about 400$
The lower the f/ the better. ie: f/2.8 is a lot better than f/4. It lets more light in and therefore will be faster and give a cleaner image at a low ISO setting...

rempli le pas trop, apres un certain poid, les straps sont tres fragiles
Now for a backpack and mono pod plus a few more memory cards for long trips this summer. I'll live with the len's I have for the moment and only replace the Tamron I have with a 17-70mm f/2.8 from SIGMA.

Dont get the 17-70 from sigma since its a 2.8-4 aperture lens, becomes 3.2f at 18mm
get the tamron 17-50 2.8, less range but great optics!
ask yannick about it,
as for a monopod. dont get one, it's only good for photographers like me that have big and heavy lenses, instead get a nice tripod, the nicest you buy probly is the mannfroto 190xprob, as for memory cards, get the sandisk extreme III or IV or the ducati edition (more expensive, but allot quicker, i got one and it rocks!), get some batteries, some genuine ones, as for backpacks, lowepro are very nice, altough I prefer tamrac. You may want to consider the dakine, but honnestly, stay with lowepro and tamrac, I wouldn't trust a very expensive kit in a dakine bag.
cheers
Mike,
my other option is a 17-40 L F/4 which you had also suggested hier up on this thread. The mono-pod is a must for where I'll be mostly shooting pix, in the deep woods so a better option for me. But I'm also getting a good tripod don't worry. The backpack is already chosen and yes a name brand, the Tamrac Expedition 7.
Later I'll get the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, great reviews and I got some great personal feedback on it as well.

I have the expedition &, great bag, lots of space, perfect for your height, not to heavy ![]()
also, of course the 17-40, is alot more sharp at all focal lenghts, has a lot more reselling value and well better built and of course it's an L lens, and thats quality within a single digit

Is it the Canon version you mean?

yup
Finally a new gear backpack with 40L capacity for long day hikes, a monopod, Fisheye lens and a new flash. Fairly well equiped now, time to do more serious photography and have some fun. ![]()

Hard case set up for travelling and just one of several, but it gets transfered to a backpack with only what I need.
